Toscolano Maderno is a place where nature, culture, history, gastronomy and traditions come together to offer you unique moments, from the lake to the mountains. The municipality, created in 1928 by the merger of two towns on the western shore of Lake Garda, is a huge open-air museum with a rich and interesting offer for culture, nature and sport lovers. The two original towns are separated only by the Toscolano River, with Toscolano to the north and Maderno to the south. The river has formed a wide alluvial plain on the lake shore. The town extends from the beautiful beaches on the peninsula surrounded by the lake to the hills below Monte Pizzocolo, where hiking and walking trails offer spectacular views. The modern residential areas and some campsites are surrounded by greenery.
Toscolano has been known for papermaking and printing since the Middle Ages. Martin Luther printed his Bible on paper made in Toscolano. The water of the Tosolano-Widbach, which flows down from the mountains, powered the paper mills. Today the river is dammed in Lago di Valvestino high above Lake Garda and has lost its powerful flow. In the valley of the paper mills you can walk in the footsteps of centuries-old traditions and immerse yourself in the industrial past of the town.
Maderno has a beautiful old town center, and along the lake road there are many beautiful villas in large gardens. A car ferry runs year-round from here to Torri del Benaco on the eastern shore, or you can take a round trip on one of the many Navigarda boats.
Already in the 17th and 18th centuries the Dukes of Mantua felt very much at home in this small town, having their summer residence in the Gonzaga Palace and in Villa del Serraglio.
Toscolano Maderno has many interesting sights to offer. Not to be missed is a visit to the Roman villa of the Nonii Arrii, which is one of the most important residential buildings from Roman times on Lake Garda. The villa was built in the 1st century AD by the Nonii family, one of the most influential families in the Brescia area.
There are also many beautiful historic buildings, villas and churches, such as the Basilica of Sant"Andrea and the Parish Church of San Pietro e Paolo with paintings by the Venetian painter Andrea Celesti.
There is also plenty to do in Toscolano for sports enthusiasts. There are numerous mountain bike tours and hiking opportunities through the unique landscape, or you can improve your handicap at Bogliaco Golf Resort, one of the oldest golf courses in Italy.
