Stintino and the Asinara Island are located in the extreme northwest of Sardinia. While Stintino is an independent village, the island of Isola dell"Asinara actually belongs to the municipality of Porto Torres. Geographically, however, it is closer to Stintino or lies in front of the headland on which Stintino is located.
Along the headland, which juts into the sea around Stintino, the landscape is mostly flat. All around there are several beaches, which are also mostly flat into the sea and therefore well suited for families. The island of Asinara, on the other hand, has both flat landscapes and hills. It is relatively sparse and characterized by flat growing Mediterranean scrub (bushes) as well as rocks. The Isola dell"Asinara and the surrounding sea area are protected.
From the very first glance it is clear that this is the stuff of vacation dreams. The beaches near the village of Stintino and at the very tip of Sardinia (Capo Falcone) are simply gorgeous. The same goes for the beaches on the islands of Isola dell"Asinara and Isola Piana, which are located just in front of Capo Falcone. La Pelosa beach is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches in Sardinia. From the tower in front of the beach "La Pelosa" you can see the whole surrounding area: the Stinino peninsula with Capo Falcone, Isola dell"Asinare and Isola Piana. If the weather is nice and the summer days are warm, it is worth visiting the island, preferably by ship or boat. Such a tour can be started from the port of Stintino or from the port of Porto Torres.
The island of Asinara served in past times as a prison camp and also as a quarantine island for people with contagious diseases such as typhoid or malaria. The old prison was also used as a prisoner of war camp.
The dark past is long gone, Asinara has been declared a national park. It is famous for its unspoiled nature, wonderful beaches or coves, beautiful walking and hiking trails and, above all, for the white donkeys with blue eyes that can be found everywhere on the Isola dell"Asinara. Donkeys, of course, are not the only animals that can be found here. Omnipresent are many birds, turtles and other animals. Only farm animals like sheep are not found on Isola dell"Asinara.
The beach La Pelosa is located at the extreme end of the headland near Stintino. It is always very busy during the season and even until the beginning of November there is hardly any peace and quiet on this beach. Along the headland there are other beautiful beaches: the beach Tamerici, the beach Punta Negra or the beach Gabbiano Tratto invite you to escape.
